Bathing elephants at sunset

Bathing elephants at sunset

Taken at the Chobe River, I saw this herd of elephants come down from the hills to bathe and drink at the river's edge. They were literally about 200 feet from our camp. I decided to creep down to the water's edge and try and capture a few shots before the light failed.

What I didn't realise is that there was still some elephants moving from the hills to the water to join them and, whilst I was creeping forward to take more pictures, a 14' high elephant burst through the bush and stopped dead in it's tracks in front of me. I was literally 8 feet away staring eye to eye with it.

I slowly began to back off and retreat towards camp and, after a few seconds, the elephant saw me as no threat thank God as, otherwise, I wouldn't have lived to publish this photo!!

The photograph (alongside the majority of my work) is completely untouched and unedited. This is the original photograph - African sunsets are really that colourful :-)
